I love tea. I'm only speaking for myself here, but even if it's just a quick swig in a plastic cup, it'll do the trick.

However, we all know there's nothing better than the quintessentially British ceremony of afternoon tea – which is why I'm glad that celebrity chef Nigel Slater has presented us with some tips on how to create the perfect scone.

Writing for his column in the Guardian, Slater – who has written several cookery books and is the face of the BBC's A Taste of My Life – said that now is the best time to get some homemade jam on the case to mix with the clotted cream that accompanies a cuppa so well.

In terms of flavours, there are the old-fashioned – strawberry and raspberry – or the more timely, in the form of plum.

He suggested going for a Cornish split – a small cake with a part perfect for filling with seasonal fruit puree – rather than the traditional bun.

"They deserve a pretty plate, some good gossip and either clotted cream or some double cream softly whipped. Oh and a pot of tea rather than the usual bag in a mug," Slater added.

Sounds delicious, doesn't it?

Let's get the jam in the jars, bingo fans.
